Model Answer

Dear Sarah,

I hope this letter finds you in great spirits.

I’ve been eagerly counting down the days until our upcoming holiday and it’s hard to express how much I’ve been looking forward to it. The thought of sunny days, endless laughter, and exploring new places with you has kept me excited and motivated for weeks.

Unfortunately, life has thrown a bit of a curveball, and I need to change our plans. My work situation has become unexpectedly hectic, and I won’t be able to take time off during the dates we originally planned for our holiday. I can’t tell you how disappointed I am about this because I was so looking forward to our adventure.

However, I’m determined not to let this setback dampen our plans entirely. How about we consider rescheduling our trip for a later date that works for both of us? I’ve already checked my work schedule for the next couple of months, and I’m more flexible around December. I understand if you’re disappointed, and I am truly sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but I’m hoping we can still make this holiday happen.

Please let me know what you think and if these new dates work for you. I’m looking forward to seeing you soon.

Warmest wishes,

Jane

Evaluation of the model answer

Your letter is warm, sincere, and effectively conveys your message while being thoughtful toward your friend. Here’s an evaluation with some suggestions for refinement:

Tone and Content: Band 9

  • The tone is friendly, warm, and caring, which is perfect for this type of personal communication.
  • You clearly explain the reason for rescheduling and offer an alternative solution without being pushy or dismissive of your friend’s possible disappointment.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 9

  • The letter is well-organized, with a clear flow from the introduction to the explanation and the solution.
  • Each paragraph connects logically, making the overall message easy to follow.

Language and Grammar: Band 9

  • The language is casual but well-structured and appropriate for a personal letter.
  • One minor point: in the phrase, “My work situation has become unexpectedly hectic,” you might consider simplifying it to “My work has become unexpectedly hectic” for smoother reading. Additionally, “The thought of sunny days, endless laughter…” could be rephrased to “The thought of sunny days and endless laughter…” to avoid redundancy.

Suggestions for Improvement:

  • The letter is already very well-written, but you could add a closing sentence expressing how much you value spending time with your friend, e.g., “I can’t wait to spend time with you, whenever we manage to make it happen!”

Overall, it’s an excellent, heartfelt letter that communicates your situation effectively while maintaining a warm and positive tone.
